Google Zineb Ait Bahajji from the Webmaster Trends Team at Google was quoted saying the 21 April mobile-friendly ranking algorithm will have more of an impact on Google search results than the Google Panda update and the Google Penguin updates.

It is also estimated that 50% of search on Google is done via mobile phones. This by itself could have a huge impact on your website, specifically shopping sites, businesses, news sites as well as tourism sites that are reliant on mobile users.

There are however false rumours spreading with regards to the impact of the mobile-friendly algorithm. Below I have answered a few frequently asked questions.

Will my site vanish from mobile search if not mobile friendly?

It will not totally vanish from the search results, it may, however, loose ranking. Google will now serve users relevant, high-quality search results that are optimized for mobile devices, taking preference to mobile friendly sites.

Would this have an impact on the traffic to my site in Search Console if it fails the mobile-friendly test

That would depend on your targeted audience. If your site (prior to the algorithm update) was reliant on mobile users then yes it will have an impact on your traffic. On the other hand… If your site never received mobile hits prior to the algorithm, it shouldn’t impact your search traffic in Google Search Console.

How can I test if my site is mobile friendly?

Google Developers has supplied a tool – https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly/ will analyze a URL and report if the page has a mobile-friendly design. The tool analyses per page and not site-wide. Meaning you need to test each URL.

Are you crazy, I have a million URL’s!

No need to stress - Navigate to Google Search Console and click on your website. If you don’t have a Search Console account you need to open one using your Gmail account, then submit and verify your site. The “Mobile Usability” errors should display immediately once the site has been added.

Then click on each usability error to identify each error page.
