Panda, Advertising And Affiliates
As with thin content, aggregated content and low-quality user-generated content Panda do target excessive advertising that restricts the main page content as well as thin affiliate sites.
Most Panda looser has an over-abundance of ads or affiliate links on the page with poor content. Far too many Webmasters these days are trying to gain more benefit from advertising and affiliates rather than concerning themselves with content that is useful to the user. And the majority of affiliates aggregate copy content from the suppliers/manufacturers, adding little or no unique value (that by itself is food for Panda)
A Google spokesman made the following statement:
An extreme example is when a site’s primary function is to funnel users to other sites via ads or affiliate links, the content is widely available on the internet or it’s hastily produced, and is explicitly constructed to attract visitors from search engines. The Panda algorithm may continue to show such a site for more specific and highly-relevant queries, but its visibility will be reduced for queries where the site owner’s benefit is disproportionate to the user’s benefit.
And the same applies to ads that obscure the page content (too many ads above the fold) John Mueller had the following to say:
If these ads are on these pages, and they’re essentially not in the way, they don’t kind of break the user experience of these pages, then I see no real problem with that.
It would be a little bit more tricky if these were for example adult content ads, where our adult content algorithms would look at this page and say well, primary topic isn’t adult oriented, but there are a lot of adult content ads on here, therefore we don’t really know how to fit this into our safe search filter and say is this adult content.
The Adult Content Algorithm by itself will filter your page from search if you advertise adult ads, and so will Panda. In essence, the Above the Fold Algorithm is already part of the core algorithm that targets excessive ads above the fold that forces the user to scroll to see the content, and so is Panda.
Affiliate websites and adult sites in general over advertise and are more susceptible to the Adult Content Algorithm, Above the Fold Algorithm and Panda. Google sure has created a bunch of advertising algorithms, which evolved from Black Hat Webmasters breaking user experience and affiliate content that’s already widely available on the internet.
Panda, in essence, does not actually filter your site due to affiliate links, Panda filters the content of affiliates.
But at the same time we see a lot of affiliates who are basically just lazy people who copy and paste the feeds that they get and publish them on their websites. And this kind of lower quality content, thin content, is something that’s really hard for us to show in search. Because we see people, sometimes like hundreds of people taking the same affiliate feed, republish it on their websites and of course, they are not all going to all rank number one for those terms.
Google and the Panda Algorithm don’t have an issue with affiliate links, their issue is the copy, scraped content that offers the user nothing unique.
Panda Advertising Affiliate Recovery
The first thing to do is to remove advertising links that have had very little clicks or have never seen a click and leave your highest revenue links. If your highest revenue links have been receiving traffic pre and post Panda update, they’ve probably passed.
That you can analyze by checking Google referrals. Always remembering, if the affiliate content is low-quality it won’t help to remove the links, you need to amend the content, noindex, consolidate similar pages, or remove the content.
By checking Google referrals should give you a pretty good idea of where you stand.
And finally – Make sure you mark your advertising links rel=’nofollow’, otherwise the Penguin Algorithm will nail you.
